US HISTORY:

Rough sketch of political cartoons due today. Use rubric to evaluate the cartoon.

0: Nothing handed in.

1-2: A picture is turned in. Drawings of some kind have no resemblance to the assignment.

3-4: The picture bears little resemblance to the assignment. Some part of it might connect to the colonial time period. The text might briefly mention slavery. In no way does the text voice any opinions or reasons about slavery.

5-6: The picture has some resemblance to the assignment. Has two or three of the assigned characters. The slave offers no clear opinion on his situation. The delegates have stated some view of slavery. Shows no clear connection to the time period of 1775.

7-8: The picture locates the cartoon in the 1775 time period. The essentials are there: Northern and Southern delegates offer some opinion on the issue of slavery. The slave offers a view of his situation.

9-10: The picture vividly establishes time period of 1775. Reveals the strong opinions of the northern and southern delegates and the african slave. Text clearly establishes the situation and opinions of the cartoonist regarding slavery in 1775.

WORLD STUDIES:

Understand what direct quotes are and how to use them in a written presentation:

• A direct quote is when you take what someone said–from an interview, book, movie or song–and use it in your own writing, word for word.

• When using the quote you must put “ ” around the entire quote and explain who said it, including the source and page number.

Find 2 direct quotes that show how pollution (4.4) in the Great Lakes region is affecting the ecosystem. Record them in your two-sided journal (T-chart). Cite chapter/section and page number.

Example: “Old toxic waste dumps also pollute. Many contain poisons that leak into waterways.” (4.4 p.71)

1.) Where in 4.4 can we close-read for direct quotes?

2.) Locate one direct quote.

3.) How can we tell if it shows pollution affecting the Great Lakes?

4.) How can we tell if we have properly cited it?
